NRA ads present little evidence

The National Rifle Association recently accused democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama of supporting high taxes on gun owners. TV ads attacked the candidate, saying Obama was in favor of a “huge new tax” on guns.
However, the ads are presented with very little evidence to back up the NRA’s claims. A newspaper clip in the Chicago [...]

Blues-rock duo play The Orange Peel

The Black Keys are coming to Asheville’s The Orange Peel Friday.
Tickets are sold out, so if you didn’t jump on it when the show was announced months ago, you are sadly out of luck. Doors open at 8 p.m., and I suggest being in line early so you can make it up front to feel [...]

The House voted 228 to 205 defeating the proposal with fewer Republican votes than expected. The 205 representatives consisted of 95 Democrats and 133 Republicans.

Band of the Week: Bowerbirds

I’m in love with Bowerbirds…partly because they are from Raleigh, but mostly because they are amazing.
Strange and strong vocals from Phil Moore and Beth Tacular carry the Americana trio, over a blend of the accordion, autoharp, percussion and violin.
The band returns from a European tour to play a few shows with the adorable Laura Gibson [...]

Overheard at Appalachian

Sometimes, I will admit, the things I hear don’t make any kind of sense  – not because people don’t know what they are saying, but simply because they say it so weird that I cannot understand them. I might have mis-overheard some of today’s gems, but that doesn’t make them any less amusing.
“If you have [...]

The View from the Press Box

Mid 4th Quarter
My pre-game score prediction, as printed in The Appalachian is one Appalachian touchdown away from the current 48 – 14 score.
Mountaineer fans were given a scare when Appalachian quarterback Armanti Edwards stayed on the ground after a rush at the end of the third quarter.
Edwards was assisted off of the field by athletic [...]

The View from the Press Box

Half time report
The first half of tonight’s game found many Appalachian fans braving the wet weather to watch the Mountaineers take on the Presbyterian College Blue Hose.
Presbyterian showed Appalachian on their first possession that the numbers associated with quarterback Tim Webb’s arm are indisputable.
Webb passed the ball down the field on the first drive allowing [...]

Bad news, in the form of an injury list, for the Mountaineers entering their game this evening against Presbyterian College.
In addition to losing starting running back Devon Moore, now tacked onto the list are defensive ends Quavian Lewis and Tony Robertson,  corner back Dominique McDuffie, and wide receiver James HIll.
Robertson will be out for at [...]
